Smart Farming

 

By the 2050 human population will be over 10 billion. Therefore we need to prepare to fulfill the food need of that kind of population.  Which means we should double the amount of food we now produce. To achieve that target we have introduced new technologies for farming and agriculture. These kinds of improvements in farming and agriculture allow us to not only increase productivity but also reduce the human workload. So let’s talk about what is smart farming and how we can implement it in real life.

 

 

What is smart farming

Smart farming is a method used to increase productivity and the quality of agriculture products with the use of advanced technologies and the Internet of things. For example, in the last decade, we didn’t have a proper way to predict the weather with high accuracy. But with smart farming, we have the capability to forecast the weather with high accuracy. So we can manage other things according to that. We will discuss more details about those applications later in this article.

So with the involvement of the Internet of things, agriculture has to replace plenty of ancient tools with highly technical tools. In the next few decades, almost every aspect of farming will get more benefits from advanced technological involvement.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Benefits of smart farming

  • Increase production and quality: With new advanced tools, planting, watering and many more things have become very much accurate. Therefore the production and quality rates have a clear increment.
  • Remote monitoring and live insights: Farmers can monitor multiple fields using the internet from anywhere in the world. So they can get data about soil, weather, productions, and many more things. Therefore they can get rights decisions without visiting the farm.
  • Low operation cost: Smart farming can minimize the operation cost by reducing human engagement. That can cause to minimize the errors in the operations done by humans.
  • Water conservation: Soil moisture sensors help to measure the moisture of the soil and control the watering system to water in the most suitable times.

 

How smart farming affect the future of agriculture

According to the statistics, 11 million agricultural workers produced food for 76 million people in 1900. It about a 1:7 ratio. But after 120 years (in 2020) 6.5 million workers feed about 322 million people in the USA. That is nearly a 1:46 ratio. That explains how much the technologies used in framing have grown. That’s mainly because workers have replaced by machines which are very much faster and efficient than humans.

 

Autonomous Picker

This is a Belgian innovation that is designed to gather strawberries from trees very faster than humans. It can be also used to pick any other fruit. This is a combination of smart photonics technology and an innovative clasping mechanism to pick up 360kg of strawberries each day. That is twice as faster as humans.

 

 

Robotic Weed/Pest Killer

Experts estimate that each year between 20-40% of global crops has destroyed by pests and diseases. As a perfect solution for this problem Robotic Weed came to the action. This is capable of identifying the weeds from crops using cameras and artificial intelligence. Then it destroys weeds without hurting crops.

 

 

Robotic Soil Sampler

This is a completely autonomous robot that can collect packages of soil to investigate and give a report that contains almost everything important for farming.

 

Completely Autonomous Farms

In a fully autonomous farm machines will completely take over the control of the farm. That means tractors will drive without a driver, farming equipment will be able to do specific tasks itself (Spray, plant, plow, weed, etc).

 

 

Drone-Assisted Crop Monitoring

By using drones, farmers can see the soil variation of the field, pest and fungus infections, irrigation problems and many more details. Not only that, these drones can use for several other purposes like optimizing agriculture operations, increase crop production, and monitor crops. This is extremely effective in very large scale agricultural activities

 

 

 

Most of these machines/technologies have already being used in some countries. But in the future, those things won’t very rare to see even in a 3rd world country. Apart from these technologies, there are plenty more. To find out more check the video below.

 

 

However, these techniques can be applied not only for large scale farms but also for small farming or family farming. Therefore even beginner level farmers can get a huge boost for there productions using these techniques.
